Who are the illuminati?
The Illuminati generally refers to a secret society of men and women who maintain ultimate control over a country, continent, or the entire world depending on who you as. I personally do believe there are groups on the world that exhibit power and control over entire nation and I'll cover that in a moment, but just to add a little perspective first, I would like to counter Esteban's 3 points first.
While they are all solid and valid points, the trick to knowing whether or not they're real is understanding how it is they would function.
1. While the discussing of the Illuminati would indeed be a point of contention, there's a different effect in hiding through censorship and hiding in plain sight By censoring and preventing a conversation such as this from occurring, it may not reach the general populace, but those directly involved in the forming of such a question would know something is up. By allowing this conversation to be had, on the other hand, it enables them to hide in plain sight by encouraging people like you to come to their defense by denying their existence with points of logical conclusion. This is part of the power that they would theoretically hold over us. We are doing their work for them.
2. It would indeed be difficult to control a nation with such a large number of people, but this is suggesting that the Illuminati are interested in operating on such a small-scale focus. The trick isn't in controlling every thought and action we make, but in limiting us to the options that we're able to make. Focusing on America in particular, what do people generally have in their lives? They have a job, they may or may not have religion, and they may or may not have some form of hobby or entertainment. Our jobs influence our income, which influences how much we can afford to go out and do, our religion or lack thereof) trains us in certain though patterns and gives us specific points to look for in a thought process, and our hobbies are generally restricted to our income, beliefs, and are generally considered to be harmless to a power base seeking control. Keeping people happy is an ideal way of maintaining control of a populace and this is effectively done through the promise of Freedoms such as the Freedom of Speech (which as Snowden and Assange have proven, there is a limit to how much this freedom permits) and you could even go as far as believe that the plight of countries like North Korea serves as a buffer to make the larger populations feel good about their own country not being so corrupt, but keeping people distracted is an equally effective means of controlling a population. Again I refer to America because I know it's plight best. You look at the powers like the NSA with everything going on behind closed doors. Nasty stuff has begun leaking out thanks to Snowden, Manning, and several others and while this has some people demanding answers, it's been spun in a way that makes these people out to be the bad guys and the news is actively distracting people further with entertainment rubbish like the flaying of Paula Deen or the poaching of the Duck Dynasty cast for comments or opinions that are not only legal, but entirely within their rights to make, and Americans get so hung up on it that they lose focus of the real issue. Distraction is the key to operating undercover and modern society has been trained to flock like a herd of sheep to whatever "pressing issue" has presented itself to society.
